چکیده

An individual-based model (IBM) of a spatiotemporal terrestrial ecological population is proposed. This model is spatially explicit and features the position of each individual together with another characteristic, such as the size of the individual, which evolves according to a given stochastic model. The population is locally regulated through an explicit competition kernel. The IBM is represented as a measure-valued branching/di using stochastic process. The approach allows (i) to describe the associated Monte Carlo simulation and (ii) to analyze the limit process under large initial population size asymptotic. The limit macroscopic model is a deterministic integro-di erential equation.

SPECIAL FEATURE: DATA ASSIMILATION Improving the quantification of terrestrial ecosystem carbon dynamics over the United States using an adjoint method

We used an adjoint version of the process-based Terrestrial Ecosystem Model (TEM) to optimize the model parameters in a spatially explicit manner by assimilating satellite-based estimates of gross primary production (GPP) in the conterminous United States. Traditionally, terrestrial ecosystem model parameterization is conducted at site-level for various plant functional types (PFTs). The optima...

Spatio-temporal development of forests / current trends in field methods and models

We present a critical review of current trends in research of spatio-temporal development of forests. The paper addresses (1) field methods for the development of spatially-explicit models of forest dynamics and their integration in models of forest dynamics, (2) strengths and limitations of traditional patch models versus spatiallyexplicit, individual-based models, and (3) the potential for mo...

Modeling Behavior by Coastal River Otter (Lontra Canadensis) in Response to Prey Availability in Prince William Sound, Alaska: A Spatially-Explicit Individual-Based Approach

Effects of climate change on animal behavior and cascading ecosystem responses are rarely evaluated. In coastal Alaska, social river otters (Lontra Canadensis), largely males, cooperatively forage on schooling fish and use latrine sites to communicate group associations and dominance. Conversely, solitary otters, mainly females, feed on intertidal-demersal fish and display mutual avoidance via ...

Coarse graining of an individual-based plant model

The evolution and structuring of plant communities is governed by local plant-to-plant interaction. It has been shown that the individual variability of the organisms and the spatial neighbor constellation is essential for plant system dynamics. Therefore, several spatially explicit individual-based model approaches for plant communities have been developed in the last decades. Among these the ...
